The first bacterium discovered to allow for rosette colonies in the lab was Algoriphagus machipongonensis.

In the wild, S. rosetta is found in its "rosette" form, explaining its name.

Choanoflagellates like S. rosetta were once thought to be more closely related to the similar choanocytes of sponges, which are animals. However, choanoflagellates are not animals and are not cells of any animal.

Much of modern S. rosetta research has been done by the King Lab of UC Berkeley.
