Discovery
Tom Nerad, associated with the ATCC, isolated the choanoflagellate from brackish Virginia water in February 2000. People knew of colony-forming choanoflagellates in nature, but none were isolated, formally identified, and readily available for further research. This was the first one.
On the left is Hog Island. The original S. rosetta sample was taken off the coast of the island.
